One of the most important rights of children anywhere in the world, even if they are refugees, is access to good quality education. Since the beginning of the displacement of Syrian Families due to the war in the country, thousands of school-aged children have come to Lebanon. A responsible initiative was needed to fulfil this legitimate fundamental children’s right, regardless of their circumstances.
The educational support project for Syrian students was launched. Theoretically, until their return to their country in the 2013-2014 school year. Hundreds of children joined school and were educated academically by Syrian teachers using Syria’s original curriculum. This educational project – which the founders thought temporary until the displaced refugees return to their country – has provided education for students all day long with morning and evening programs, as well as employment opportunities for Syrian teachers. The education program was based on Syrian curriculum in the school year 2014-2015.
Nevertheless things have not changed. There was a greater need to work on developing education for Syrian students because they may stay in Lebanon for a long time, in addition to the increasing numbers of Syrian babies born in Lebanon.
In the 2015-2016 academic year Rouwwad Assalam school was the first school that opened a formal Lebanese curriculum for Syrian students living in and around Khaldeh- Beirut district area and began investing in a Lebanese private school license. Not only has the school begun this reality, but another important project has been launched: the translation into Arabic of scientific subjects in the Lebanese curriculum for intermediate and secondary classes so that students can obtain recognized degrees and enter universities both in Lebanon and abroad. Teachers have also been trained about teaching the Lebanese curriculum at all levels.
The school’s efforts in the translation of materials and the production of translated books along with exam forms and solutions continued until the end of the 2016-2017 academic year. The results of two years of continuous hard work came in the 2017 – 2018 academic year, where Lebanese middle and high school students were able to achieve the best success rates among Syrian students. The success rate reached 70%. In addition, the school has not limited its reception to Syrian children. It has also started to receive Lebanese students of neediest families, due to applying the vision of integration between the Syrian and Lebanese civilians who registered their children without hesitation.
Developing work at the school in subsequent school years, where a higher level of leadership was achieved in and around the Khaldeh area in terms of equipment, logistical improvements and upgrading of the educational service provided at all levels.
The importance of the school lies in its leadership since its start in promoting the right to education of Syrian children and removing obstacles that impede their education in Lebanon, despite the limited possibilities and difficult economic and social conditions.
Since its start, the vision of Rouwwad Assalam school was one of the leading charitable schools in the field. Through its professional and loyal work, the school has achieved good educational results and a relatively high success rate that has earned it a good reputation and helped build credibility among Syrian and Lebanese students equally.
Our ambition and vision for the near future are designed to develop the educational environment and improve the educational experience of all students at all levels and to be a pioneer in sharing the most successful educational practices with schools that need constant guidance and support.
Rouwad is a private, charitable school registered at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in the Lebanese Republic. It was established in 2013 and aims to provide quality education to disfavored students in Khaldeh region and its surroundings.
